Cabarroguis, Quirino (17 November) — President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo recently awarded a special citation for this province for the successful implementation of its ‘I Love Quirino’, the provincial government’s flagship program aimed at strengthening the implementation of anti- hunger interventions in the province.
Governor Dakila Carlo E. Cua, together with the Provincial Anti-Hunger Task Force personally received the award, a project grant in the amount of P250,000 and a trophy.
The Gawad Pagkain award intends to recognize local government initiatives and innovations in implementing hunger mitigation efforts, encourage local government units to sustain hunger mitigation efforts and encourage documentation and showcasing of good practices along hunger mitigation.
Quirino Province is the youngest among the provinces in Cagayan Valley and it is headed by young leaders with advanced and mature vision for the province.
Last year, Cua organized the Provincial Anti-Hunger Task Force for the province to implement the Accelerated Hunger Mitigation Program (AHMP) of the national government.
Guided by the framework of the AHMP, the ‘I Love Quirino’ project was conceptualized with the main goal to improve the living condition of the Quirinians and at the same time to boost their self- sufficiency through the livelihood projects provided by the provincial government.
Quirino Province is a non-AHMP province but it is committed to eradicate hunger by increasing food production through seed and fertilizer subsidy, irrigation systems development, technical assistance on high value commercial crop production among others.
To put money in people’s pockets, the AHMP task force has provided livelihood assistance through the Quirino Livelihood for Everyone (Q-Life) such as production of feed crops, livestock and poultry raising, aquaculture, processing and vending.
President Arroyo in one of her visits in the province, lauded the Quirinians for their contribution to food production program of the national government.

MADDELA, Quirino—A former governor of this province has called for the complete stop of all small-scale mining activities in this province, calling their operations illegal, destructive to the environment, and inimical to the interests of local residents.
Former Quirino Gov. Pedro Bacani condemned all small-scale mining activities at the Didipio mining impact zone, particularly on the slopes of Dinkidi Hill, host to the OceanaGold Philippines gold-copper project that straddles the boundaries of Quirino and Nueva Vizcaya.
